Born in 1967 in Kansas City, Mo., Michael Letzig graduated with a B.F.A. in Design from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989. As an artist and designer, Michaels career spans 18 years and has covered an array of industries from home décor to stationery and gifts to visual merchandising and has served in numerous capacities as contractor and creative director.
In the late eighties, Letzig became a board member of the progressive artist cooperative “Theme”, mounting spontaneous “pop-up” exhibitions/installations around the country.
In 1994, an opportunity as Art Director for a small design company brought Letzig to New York City, fulfilling a life-long dream to live in The Big Apple. A year later he established his own illustration studio and for the next ten years created works for a wide range of products.
The events of Sept. 11th marked a new chapter in Letzig’s artistic career. That day ignited a fierce desire to create works that celebrate the abundant beauty in the natural world that remains. He has since immersed himself fully into canvas landscape paintings and murals. A staunch environmentalist, Letzig’s work calls attention to the relevance of nature and mans relationship to it. As a result of his determination, his work is sought after by collectors along the east coast. His large scale mural installations can be seen in public spaces such Nino’s Tuscany restaurant located in midtown Manhattan and the Mondrian Hotel, Scottsdale and have received coverage in such prestigious publications as New York Magazine, Craine’s, Interior Design and Vogue Germany, among others.
Through his contacts with interior designers, Letzig also enjoys a thriving decorative painting business that affords him the pleasure of extending his talents into the private homes of many clients. He employs a wide range of techniques and materials and is always experimenting and developing his craft. A member of SALI, The Stencil Artisans League, Inc., Michael attends annual conferences and trade shows to stay on top of the industry. Today he enjoys traveling throughout the US and Europe finding inspiration for his work.
